How I Tested These
To find the best free ATS resume checker, I built one resume and ran it through every tool, so the only thing changing was the checker. It is a mid-level software engineer with a five-year history, a single-column layout, standard headings, real dates, and an email, phone, and LinkedIn in the body. Clean on purpose, so any score difference reflects the tool and not a broken file.
Full disclosure: I build ATS Resume Checker, one of the six tools here. I ran it the same way as the others and I will tell you exactly where it loses.
