What Does Resume Parsing Actually Mean?
Parsing is the step where software turns your resume from a document into data. It does not read the page the way you do. It pulls the text apart and files each piece into a field a recruiter can search: name, job title, company, dates, skills. The recruiter then searches that filed record, not your original file.
That one fact changes how you should think about your resume. The version a person eventually reads is not the version the search runs on. If the parse is clean, your experience is findable. If it is not, your resume is sitting in the system with the wrong words in the wrong fields, and no search reaches it.
Underneath, the parser is only doing two things. It reads your text in an order, and it maps what it reads into fields. Almost every formatting rule you have heard traces back to one of those two jobs. Get the model and you stop memorizing rules.
How Does an ATS Parse a Resume, Step by Step?
Four steps run the moment you upload. Only the middle two touch your layout, and those are the ones that decide whether your resume survives the trip intact.
It flattens your file to text
The first thing the parser does is throw away the picture. Your fonts, spacing, columns, and colors are dropped, and what is left is a stream of characters. If a word lived inside an image or a logo, there is no character to keep, so it is gone at this step before anything else happens.
It reads that text in one order
The parser walks the flattened text in a set path, usually top to bottom and left to right. This is the step columns break. A sidebar sitting beside your main content gets pulled into the same line of reading, so two unrelated things end up glued together.
It maps chunks to fields
Now it tries to sort the text into a record: name here, email there, each job title with its company and dates, each skill. It leans on your section headings to know where it is. A heading it recognizes lands the section in the right field. A clever label lands it nowhere.
It stores a searchable record

Does a Parsing Error Get Your Resume Rejected?
Rarely, and this is where most advice overreaches. A parsing error does not reach into the system and delete your resume. It does something quieter. It files your experience under the wrong fields or drops it, so when the recruiter searches, your record does not match and never surfaces.

How to Make Your Resume Parse Cleanly
